Etci Kitchen is a Turkish restaurant in the city centre, a couple of minutes away from the sea. It serves 100% halal meat, though with some alcohol served on site. We’ve been countless times, and a list of favourites has emerged.
We ordered yoğurtlu kuzu şiş and tavuk sarma beyti, for around £35 total. Etci holds a special place in our heart, being one of the first halal restaurants we visited in Brighton. The accompanying pomegranate salad stood out as a highlight, and it was definitely filling. Filling enough that cycling home afterwards wasn’t easy!

The second visit was more of a proper spread: chicken beyti, tavuk sarma beyti, a lahmacun (£5.50), a virgin piña colada, a summer fruit punch and a chocolate fudge cake.

The chicken beyti was a highlight again; light, despite already having bread and some of the lahmacun alongside it. A bit of couscous came over by accident with the order; the flavour was fine, but the texture wasn’t for us, so rice remains the better side and Etci replaced it without any issue, letting us keep the couscous. The salad was good as always, adding a third dimension so the plate never felt too meaty or too heavy on rice.
We also tried two mocktails this time. The summer fruit punch, described on the menu as citrus fruits, sparkling elderflower presse, mint and peach puree, mostly just tasted like peach juice, with barely any elderflower coming through and a slightly tart edge from the oranges.
The virgin piña colada was the better of the two: a genuinely nice sweet taste with a thick texture, more its own thing rather than tasting like juice from a shop, which made the price feel justified. The chocolate fudge cake closed things out well as it was a small, round, mousse-style dessert that stayed light rather than heavy.
