When you’re looking for somewhere to eat, “halal” isn’t a single label; it covers a couple of different things depending on the venue, and it’s worth knowing the difference before you go. Every restaurant on Halal Food Brighton is tagged with one of two halal statuses, and we keep the definitions the same across the whole site so you always know what you’re getting.
On Halal Food Brighton, “Fully halal” means the whole menu (food and drink) is halal. There’s no alcohol on the premises, and every dish is halal throughout. If you want to sit down without needing to check individual items, this is the tag to look for.
On Halal Food Brighton, “Halal meat” means the meat served is halal, but the menu may include other items that are not, such as alcohol. This is the more common tag among independent restaurants; the kitchen sources halal meat, but the bar might still serve wine or beer, or a dessert might use non-halal ingredients elsewhere on the menu. It’s still a genuinely halal option for the meat dishes; it just means the venue as a whole hasn’t gone fully halal. We always recommend double-checking individual items.
A blanket “halal-friendly” label doesn’t tell you much on its own, and it can be misleading. Splitting it into these two categories means you can decide what matters to you before you sit down, rather than finding out once you’re at the table.
You can filter by halal status on the All Restaurants page. Right now that filter narrows to “Halal meat” to keep all options open, but you can narrow it down to “Fully Halal” options if you prefer.
Happy eating!
